We are Proud to support STA Prop 1 on the Ballot This August!
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Prop 1 seeks to RENEW funding for Spokane Transit Authority that voters initially approved in 2016. It is NOT a new tax.
Since 2016, STA has used this funding to increase service hours by over 35%. A “Yes” vote maintains that increase, providing over 35,000 rides each weekday.
On August 4, 2026, voters in Spokane County’s transit service area will vote on this ballot measure. -
While most funding from the renewed sales tax would maintain improved service levels achieved over the last 10 years, the remaining funding would help enhance that service over the next 10 years.
These enhancements include opening the Argonne Station in 2028 and the Division Street Bus Rapid Transit line in 2030.“Mobility-on-Demand” pilots will also extend transit service to areas not currently served by STA, including the Latah Valley, north Spokane Valley, and a greater portion of the West Plains.
-
If this funding is not renewed, future service cuts are inevitable.
STA would also lose approximately $12.6 million per year in Washington State transit support and special needs grants, and $82 million in federal funds for Division Street Bus Rapid Transit would be at risk.
-
The sales tax up for renewal is 0.2%, or 2 cents for every $10 spent.
This modest sales tax directly supports ongoing operations costs.
-
As a debt-free agency, STA leverages one-time grant funds to maximize taxpayer returns, resulting in significantly more capital improvements than sales tax revenue alone.
The flip side is that many grants depend on STA maintaining its current sales tax funding levels. If Prop 1 fails, STA would lose state grants, and federal funds would be at risk.
